the oranges are like that in japan too. but the membrane comes off a lot easier. you can just unzip them. like a ziploc bag almost.

Not as symmetric and even toned as California oranges, but they do have their own special beauty. :)

I really don't know why sugar is added. The oranges are sweet enough as it is. There is sugar in everything down here! Still, hooray for the yummy oranges! They are inexpensive and I've had fresh juice all week long. :)

How cool, Richard! Now that's a gift that really paid off! Its too bad about the lack of yield though. Maybe it has something to do with the depopulation of bees right now?

The difference you noted is very interesting. Adding sugar to fruit is a really ridiculous idea.

My mom lives in Florida and has oranges very much like this. Huge, chewy seeds, mealy meat, but exceptionally good juice. We gave the trees to mom and dad as Christmas gifts in about 1994, and their yields were huge until the last couple of years, when they tapered off. We don't know if it's the weather, or if the trees are just played out.
